St John's News - 8 August 2023

Dear friends,

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.
Psalm 92:12-14

Services
If you missed Sunday’s all age service with the baptism of Phoebe Cross and a look at our sixth Woman of Faith, Esther, you can watch it on our YouTube channel.

Next Sunday's main service at 10:30am includes the Lord's Supper and we will be thinking about our next Woman of Faith - Gladys Aylward, a remarkable missionary to China.

The Hiding Place
Another extraordinary woman of faith was Corrie Ten Boon, whose family risked everything to hide Jewish refugees by the hundreds during WW2 in Holland. The Hiding Place is a stage play filmed for cinema with excellent reviews and is being shown at Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 16 August. It is a compelling story of faith, hope, love, and forgiveness in the face of unthinkable evil. Highly recommended – you can get tickets here.

Elmsfest
Elmfest is the Elmswell autumn fair at The Blackbourne on Saturday 2 September between 12:00 and 17:00. Please come along to support this community event. If you are available to help at the Christians Together In Elmswell stall, please let the Rector know. We need another gazebo, some help transporting tables etc, setting up/clearing away, and people available during the day. We aim to have some children's games, flyers and a Sunday School display, a prayer tree and a prayer tent for anyone who wishes to receive prayer. Also if you are able to make a cake for the wider event, these can be taken to the Blackbourne between 10:00 and 12:00. All proceeds go to local charities.

Ride & Stride
I am taking part in the Ride & Stride event on 9 September to raise money for Suffolk Historic Churches Trust. If you would like to support me, the sponsor form will be at the back of church in Sunday or you can donate online here. Thank you to everybody who has volunteered to welcome visitors at the church during the day. If you are able to help, please sign up on the rota at the back of church.

Confirmation
On 22nd October 2023 at 3:00pm, there is a Confirmation Service for our deanery at Lavenham. If you would like to know more about getting confirmed, then please have a word with the Rector.

Prayer
The weekly church prayer meeting is on Zoom on Saturday at 9:00am for 40 minutes. You are welcome to join us by clicking here or, load Zoom and use Meeting ID: 685 295 1296 and Password: 816262.
