St John's News - 21 February

Dear friends,

The Lord does not look at the things people look at.
People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’
1 Samuel 16:7

Today is Shrove Tuesday and I hope you are looking forward to munching on some pancakes this evening. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Lent. We shall be holding a short service incorporating the imposition of ashes at 5:00pm in church. You are warmly invited to come along.

Soul, a series looking at basics of the Christian faith, continues at The Rectory this Sunday at 7:00pm for 90 minutes. All are welcome to come and join us, even if you were unable to make the first one, last week. A drink and dessert or cake will be provided. Please let Peter know if you would like to come along - elmswellrector@gmail.com or call 01359 240512.

Don't forget, if you missed Sunday’s service, you can catch up on our YouTube channel.

Some news from the wider Anglican Church: As predicted, the recent decision made by the General Synod (the governing council of the Church of England) to permit the blessing of same sex unions in church has led to the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches distancing itself from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England. You can read the press release here. This is a significant move, as the GSFA represents 75% of Anglicans worldwide. Archbishop Justin will cease to be the leader of the Anglican Communion.

The Friends of St John's will be holding their annual meeting with tea and coffee at St John's on 25 March at 10:00am. The new Church Guide will be launched at this meeting and will be available to buy for £5.00, alongside other Friends merchandise.

Finally, the weekly church prayer meeting is on Zoom on Saturday at 9:00am for 40 minutes. To join, click here or, load Zoom and use Meeting ID: 685 295 1296 and Password: 816262.

In Christ,

Peter
