News update - 23 November

Dear friends,

Firstly, a reminder that St John's is running a Christmas Coffee and Cakes morning on Saturday 27 November at 10:00am at the church. Please do let others know and come and support this event. We will have a book stall of second hand books and cakes for sale. If you would be happy to donate a cake, or cakes or mince pies (or any other goodies) to sell, either for consumption with the tea and coffee or for people to take home, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to Gavin for his very helpful sermon on "Who is Jesus?" on Sunday, when we were celebrating "Christ the King." If you missed hearing him, you can watch the service here.

We have some news from Cambodia and Phearak, the child we sponsor. Cambodia is starting to open up with schools allowed to open from 1 November 2021. However, life continues to be extremely difficult for the majority of the population with high unemployment across most sectors. The good news is that 85% of the population have been fully vaccinated and Covid-19 rates are improving.

We have a card for Phearak at the back of the church and a small gift is being arranged through the agency, which manages the sponsorship. The card will be available to the congregation sign for the next 2 Sundays.

This Sunday sees the beginning of Advent. We will be looking at the first 18 verses of John's Gospel in the run-up to Christmas. You can pick up a card with the service details at the back of church or on our web site.

A prayer for Advent:

Our Father in heaven,
just as you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus,
help me to clear the path in my heart, too.
Show me the distractions in my life that block me from giving you my all.
As I celebrate the first coming of Jesus,
may I long for his return.
Amen.

With every blessing in Christ,

Peter
